I clicked on the technical info tab for the VDO dip tube fuel sender and it brought up a drawing for installation. It states two measurements 'L' and 'H' however there is no reference as to what these measurements are. What amount of space is required/recommended under the sensor to allow it to function currently?

L is the length of the VDO dip tube. You would normally want a bit of space between the end of the tube and the inside of the tank, 10mm would be more than adequate. You just want to avoid the two coming in contact, and anything below the dip tube is a reserve so may be beneficial.
